Just a matter of days ago, 18-year-old Itir Esen was crowned Miss Turkey. 24 hours later she was dethroned after an incredibly bizarre tweet of hers was flagged up.
The ‘unacceptable’ tweet caused social media chaos – but just what was it that Esen actually said?
Well… She compared her own period blood to the blood of the ‘martyrs’ who bled during Turkey’s military coup last year, reports The Telegraph.
According to Turkish media, she wrote on Twitter:
I got my period on the morning of the July 15 martyrs’ day. I’m marking the day by bleeding as a representation of the martyrs’ blood.
The tweet, which was made back in July, was only spotted by organisers of the beauty pageant after she had been crowned Miss Turkey, however she was swiftly removed from the role.
Can Sandikcioglu, who heads the Miss Turkey Organisation, said:
We are sad to announce that we have reached the conclusion that the tweet was posted by Itir Esen.
It is not possible for the Miss Turkey Organisation, whose aim is to promote Turkey worldwide and to contribute to its image, to accept such a posting.
During the failed two day coup last year, almost 250 people were killed and well over 2,000 were injured – however Esen claimed her post was ‘misunderstood’ and ‘not politically motivated’.
