An eighty year mystery has been solved after a Russian plane’s fate was finally revealed.

The Savoia-Marchetti S.55 took off on 26 June 1935 from the town of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinksy, yet ran into trouble after only an hour and fifteen minutes, failing to respond to any attempt at communication.

The plane had 12 people and two million roubles on it, and its whereabouts remained a mystery for years, with the case classified due to two of Stalin’s secret police being on board.

Now, a search group from a Russian NGO, who seek out the remains of those killed in accidents, claim they have discovered the bodies of three men and one woman, in the remote region of Khabarovsk.

The Russian search movement claimed:

The passengers were still lying where they fell, thrown out of the wooden cabins of the plane along with the remains of the seating and seat belts. Around them lay their personal items.

While the bodies were discovered, shockingly, the two million Roubles were not, with conspiracy theories that a third party was involved now the stuff of local legend.

According to the search team, the plane ran into trouble after taking off from Sakhalin, and ran into low cloud, with the pilot slamming it into the side of a hill, after descending into low altitude to avoid the cloud.
