Two practical jokers have divided the internet with their custard pie prank on the New York subway.

From the days of Balls of Steel, to 'do it for the Vine', to today's never-ending chase for clout, taking advantage of the obliviousness of strangers will be a pastime that lives forever.

Some never fail to make people laugh, like jump scares or Jackass fooling people with 'Bad Grandpa' back in the day. Of course, there's a time and place for every joke, and this particular prank hasn't got the reception they likely hoped for.

Posted to Instagram by @retronyc, the short clip shows a man in a high-vis waistcoat waiting for his subway home. He's probably had a long day, wherever he works, or maybe he was just starting a night shift. This part of his day would have felt incredibly insignificant.

That is, until two unnamed pranksters clinging onto the back of the carriage reach out with a pie and slap him in the face. In an instant, the man ends up on the floor and the pair glide off along the rails, never to be seen again, while nearby people help him up.

Among the comments, some clearly find it amusing, with several laughing emojis and one user writing, 'Haha classic.'

'It was even funnier on the 8th time I played it,' another wrote. 'Would of been funny if he got fried on the rails [sic],' a third, rather unhinged user wrote. 'When you're standing that close, you're kinda asking for it,' a fourth wrote in the most ridiculous comment of them all.

Others feel that it was out of order. 'This isn’t funny at all! This could be your brother, father, nephew or friend. This person just probably got off a 8- or 12-hour shift and just wanted to get home,' one wrote.

'I hope this was staged. Honestly, this made me a little sad. The man wearing the vest looked like he was coming from or going to work. Who needs that to start or end their day?' another wrote. 'Looks staged, and posting this is in poor taste considering the recent subway death and the very real threats we face riding the subways nowadays,' a third wrote.

Regardless of whether you think it's funny or not, it's pretty mental the two jokers hung onto the back of a subway just for a prank. 'Staged or not, can we just stop for second and acknowledge that there were two guys holding on to the back of the freaking subway!' one user commented.
