Elon Musk has bamboozled followers once again with a rogue and unexplained tweet.

The Tesla CEO – who recently revealed he was putting his plans to buy Twitter on hold – may be the world's current richest man, but he is definitely also in the running for the most peculiar person too.

Musk has shared an image of French King Louis XIV, with a caption that has left other users extremely confused.

The image is an early 18th Century portrait of King Louis XIV, painted by Catalan-French baroque painter, Jacint Rigau-Ros i Serra, known in French as Hyacinthe Rigaud.

It is currently on display in the Louvre.

And Musk thinks it's 'borderline too sexy'.

Offering little explanation as to why he finds the painting quite so attractive, Musk simply wrote: "Great shoes [...] Incredible art."

The painting shows King Louis XIV swathed in robes and a cape.

However, the royal is also captured by Hyacinthe Riguard showing a cheeky glimpse of leg, wearing silk stockings and red heeled shoes – perhaps the reason why Musk thinks the painting is 'sexy'? Or perhaps it's the suspicious-looking sceptre in the corner that caught his gaze?

Either way, the Tesla CEO's followers were left fairly bewildered by his random post.

A stock trader who goes by the name Lizard commented: "Brother please explain what you mean by this."

Another user replied: "King Louis XIV….. hmmmm His reign started on May 14th. @elonmusk confirmation of your acquisition?"

As well as calling French royals 'too sexy', Musk has also taken to Twitter to make a series of other rather risqué comments.

Last month, he announced he wants to buy popular fizzy drink brand Coca-Cola and 'put the cocaine back in'.

He also posted what some considered to be his most controversial tweet to date about the political landscape in the US.

The deal between Musk and Twitter may be on hold, but that hasn't stopped the Tesla CEO noting he would reinstate former US President Donald Trump on the platform.

Musk has also faced backlash from Twitter employees, with one executive accusing him of misogyny following his response to an article about one of the social networking company's lawyers reassuring other members of staff ahead of the takeover.
