A police appeal for information about an on-the-run burglar has taken an unexpected turn after members of the public took a shining to the suspect.

Jonathan Cahill, 37, is wanted by West Yorkshire Police for allegedly breaching the terms of his release from prison. The convicted burglar was released on licence in September 2021 after serving part of his sentence, but has since been recalled to prison, leading police to issue an appeal for information about his whereabouts.

Cahill, who is described as 'of medium build and approximately six feet tall', is understood to have most recently been living in Wakefield.

However, rather than racing to dob him in, Cahill has become the subject of something of a collective frenzy on social media as women swooned over his 'handsome' mugshot, which sees Cahill giving his best blue steel for the camera.

'What did he steal? People's hearts?' one person commented of the blue-eyed bandit, with another writing, 'Should be easy to find, half the women in West Yorkshire will be chasing him after reading these comments.'

One person asked, 'What's his crime, breaking hearts or houses?'

'Yorkshire’s very own Jeremy Meeks,' wrote one person, referring to the gang member-turned-model whose viral mugshot prompted the hashtag '#feloncrushfriday' in 2014. 'His mugshot earned him right bragging rights!'

The post asking for information on Cahill quickly went viral, leading others to chime in with their own thoughts on the burglar's appearance, with the West Yorkshire Police Facebook page inundated with more than 7,000 commentators looking to give their own opinion on Cahill, per Wales Online.

'Seriously. A guy keeps his hair past 30 and becomes some kind of god,' one person said with another agreeing 'I must need to go to Specsavers because I can't see what everyone else seems to be seeing.'

'Why would such a nice looking lad be such a div?' one commentator mused, with another chastising the commenters, saying, 'Aim higher ladies, no wonder half of you have terrible relationships and can't figure out what's gone wrong.'

Amid the interest in Cahill's case, police have continued to appeal for information on his whereabouts. 'Anyone who can assist in locating him is asked to contact police in Wakefield on 101 or by using the contact options on the West Yorkshire Police website,' a spokesperson for the force said.
