Pitbull Who Stopped Mother From Drowning Her Son Will Not Be Put Down

The pitbull who saved the life of a young boy when his mother was allegedly trying to kill him in the Murray River, New South Wales, will not be put down.

Buddy the dog, who has grown up around children, was believed to drag a nine-year-old boy out of the river in an attempt to save him and his brother from their mother, 27, who was allegedly trying to drown them.

The mother, who can not be named for legal reasons, told her friend in a disturbing premonition hat “I have to drown my babies”.

Tragically the five-year-old son died, but the nine-year-old is in hospital recovering, while Buddy remains in the council’s custody.

A petition to brand Buddy a hero and save him from being put down reached 50,431 signatures and the council decided to allow the dog to return to his family.

The petition read:

In this selfish mothers attempt to drown her 2 boys buddy the dog has reacted and attempted to save the boys in doing so he has bit the eldest boy in his rescue attempts unfortunately he was unable to save the youngest boy and has also bit the mother.

Buddy doesn’t have a history of being a dangerous dog and most certainly hasn’t ever bitten anyone and has never been seized before for anything. Buddy is a member of our family and has grown up around children his whole life and has been the most gentlest dog, he has clearly seen a child in distress and attempted to help, dogs don’t have hands to help like us humans they have to use their teeth and in doing so it’s being portrayed as this dog has attacked the young boy.

Bendigo Magistrates were told how the 27-year-old mother took her eldest son into the river and and held his head under the water, as the traumatised younger brother looked on and screamed from the water’s edge.

The mother has been charged with murder and attempted murder, with her own parents speaking out in favour of Buddy’s petition.

The maternal grandfather of the two boys said to The Courier Mail:

I own a similar dog and I know he was trying to save the boys, it’s their nature when they are raised with kids.

Let the ones who his actions affected decide. I have one grandson left, because this brave dog took action as required.
