Greater Manchester Police have confirmed a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault following the posting of images and audio on social media earlier today.
It comes after allegations were made against Manchester United and England footballer Mason Greenwood on social media by his girlfriend.
GMP released a statement which read: 'Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.
'An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.'
Manchester United has confirmed that Greenwood has been suspended following allegations made against him and will not play in matches or return to training until further notice.
The club has also stated it does 'not condone violence of any kind' but would not make further comment on the matter 'until the facts have been established'.
Allegations against the footballer were made this morning when Greenwood's girlfriend posted a series of images and an audio clip on Instagram showing bruises and blood with the caption: 'To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me.'
The pictures and audio have since been taken down, but police released an earlier statement saying they were 'aware of images and videos circulating on social media'.
Two police officers were seen visiting the home of Greenwood's girlfriend earlier today to take a statement.
