Police officers often get a bad rep’, but one in particular has done possibly one of the kindest acts imaginable.
He and his family made a life-changing decision to help a young boy the officer met while investigating child abuse allegations.
The officer in question, Jody Thompson, adopted 10-year-old John, as well as his baby sister two years after meeting him through a case he was working on.
Thompson, the Oklahoma officer, responded to a physical child abuse call back in 2015, having previous experience with such cases.
However he was completely stunned when he saw John – then eight-years-old – severely underweight with bruises all along his back – he weighed a mere 61lbs, a little over four stone, reports CBS.
He had a bump on his head after being submerged in a trash can full of cold water and his wrists were bound together with belts.
Speaking to CBS News, Thompson said:
He did not have a spot on his body that didn’t have a bruise or abrasion, it was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.
When I’d seen him in that house shivering and his hands tied – just soaking wet and confused – I knew at that moment, the only time I would be satisfied and sure that he was safe, is if he was with me.
Immediately Thompson wrapped the boy in a blanket and took him to the Oklahoma Children’s Advocacy Centre so that detectives could take photos.
Thompson called the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to register to become a certified foster parent and brought John home with him a few days later.
He didn’t tell his wife or their children what he was doing, but they welcomed John into their home.
Not only did the Thompson family find out they were expecting their third biological child, but seven months later the Department of Human Services contacted John to see to see if they would foster Paizley, John’s sister, who was born while in jail.
We literally picked her up in the hospital the next day when she was a day old and brought her straight home.
Never in my life did I dream of having a large family, but God had different plans and so here we are and I’m loving it all.
John is amazing, he’s a straight-A student, on the honor roll, in the gifted and talented programme and involved in the local drama club.
On Tuesday, Thompson was honoured with a certificate of commendation from the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations, with John right by his side.
Stephen Fruen, Poteau Police Chief said:
Jody’s actions as well has his families are second to none.
The example of love and compassion he has shown to this young man and his sister is an example everyone should follow.
John has recently decided to share his testimony in hopes of helping fellow abuse victims.
We went through something bad, but we’re not going got let it define who were are, we’re not going to let this hold us back.
Always have compassion, you never know what you’re going to walk into.
