Prince Andrew Claims Sex Abuse Accuser May Suffer From ‘False Memories’
Prince Andrew’s legal team has reportedly asked for permission to interview Virginia Giuffre’s husband and psychologist after the royal claimed that she may suffer from ‘false memories’.
Court documents reveal that, in a summary of his defence, Prince Andrew contends that his accuser ‘may suffer from false memories’ because her accounts of ‘the circumstances under which [he] allegedly assaulted her have repeatedly changed over the years’.
His lawyers have asked to take evidence under oath from husband Robert Giuffre, claiming that he may have insight about his wife’s ‘alleged emotional and psychological harm’.
Sky News reports that Prince Andrew is also seeking to have Giuffre’s psychologist, Dr Judith Lightfoot, questioned, with his lawyers arguing that she would be able to provide ‘relevant information’ about ‘alleged abuse by [Jeffrey] Epstein and [Ghislaine] Maxwell, childhood abuse and trauma, and claimed emotional and psychological harm and damages’.
‘Dr Lightfoot’s records (or lack thereof) reflecting [Giuffre’s] allegations against [the prince] is relevant to preparation of his defence for trial,’ his lawyers wrote in the request.
Prince Andrew, who denies Giuffre’s claims that she was trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell to have sex with the royal in 2001 when she was 17, additionally claimed that his accuser’s decision to go public with her allegations ‘contributed to any purported emotional distress and invasion of privacy she claims to have suffered’.
The reports come after it was revealed that lawyers representing Giuffre are seeking to interview a witness who claims to have seen Prince Andrew ‘with a young girl’ inside Tramps nightclub in London, ‘around the time’ Giuffre alleges she was assaulted by the prince after visiting the club.
The Duke of York’s former assistant Robert Olney is also among those Giuffre’s team is looking to obtain evidence from, with documents appearing to show that Olney’s name appeared in Epstein’s phone book under ‘Duke of York’.
Prince Andrew is set to face trial in the civil sex abuse case after a judge earlier this week rejected his attempt to have the proceedings thrown out. Following the decision Andrew, who is ninth in line to the throne, was stripped of his military titles and use of ‘His Royal Highness’ by the Queen.
The reports come as it was confirmed that Maxwell will be sentenced in June for her role in trafficking underage girls to be abused by Epstein.
