A former RAF serviceman overpowered a group of three armed muggers while on holiday in Chicago.

Neil McCarthy – originally from Plymouth but studying in the U.S. – was walking near Lake Michigan with his girlfriend when the group of would-be muggers demanded valuables off the couple, according to The Independent.

The Afghanistan veteran handed over his iPhone and wallet but ‘lost it’ then he saw the group ‘manhandling’ his girlfriend, Carisa Lerner.

Mr McCarthy got one of the attackers in a headlock but was repeatedly punched, and stabbed in the shoulder. He then managed to get hold of the knife and stab another mugger back, before all three fled the scene.

The ex-Senior Aircraftman told The Independent: “I knew I’d been stabbed, it didn’t hurt, it felt like a punch.” He continued:

A guy cycling past had called the police and when they arrived I was the one holding the bloody dripping knife, so I just put my hands up.

Mr McCarthy then used an app to track his phone, and discovering it was only 30m away gave chase. He said: “I went after him, topless at this point, and caught him and dragged him back to the police.”

His mother, Linda, says she’s ‘immensely proud’ of her son, adding: “It’s not everyday someone single-handedly fights off three men and hands one in to the police”.

Two of the alleged muggers are being held on bail, the third is still being sought.
