Ray Lewis III, the son of professional football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis, has died at just 28 years old.

Following in his dad's footsteps, Lewis III played as a running back when he attended Lake Mary Prep High School in Florida, before going on to play college football at the University of Miami, Coastal Carolina and Virginia Union.

He is one of six children fathered by footballer Lewis, who played with the Baltimore Ravens from 1996-2012 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.

Lewis III's brother, Rahsaan Lewis, shared the news of his death on Instagram this week with a tribute posted to his Story.

"Really can’t believe I’m even typing this but RIP big brother," Rahsaan wrote.

"A true angel I pray your at peace now because [I know] how much you was rlly hurtin. I don't and won't ever have the words man cuz this pain right here.... I love you I love you I love you.

"Your niece gone miss you but she will hear about u over and over just watch over us all big bruh be our guardian I promise I'll make you smile and proud [sic]."

Rahsaan didn't share any details regarding Lewis III's death, so it's unclear exactly how or when the 28-year-old passed away.

Diego Ryland, Virginia Union Associate Head Coach, told TMZ the young athlete's death is 'very unfortunate'.

"Great young man and a better teammate. The entire Virginia Union University community is praying for the family as they deal with the loss of Ray," he said.

Prior to his death, Lewis III most recently played for the Wyoming Mustangs of the Champions Indoor Football league, as well as pursuing a career in the music industry.

His father, who is now 48 years old, finished his career in 2012 as a two-time Super Bowl champion.

Lewis was also Super Bowl 35 MVP, a two-time defensive player of the year and was first team All-Pro seven times.

The football star does not appear to have commented on his son's death at the time of writing (16 June), but many other supporters have taken to social media to pay tribute to Lewis III.

"Send a prayer up for Ray Lewis and his family after the passing of his son. Ray Lewis III was only 28 years old," one Twitter user wrote, while another commented: "My thoughts & prayers are with Ray Lewis and his family & everyone that was blessed to know Ray Lewis III. A father should never have to grieve the loss of his son. So tragic."
