There’s been a fair bit of concern surrounding Resident Evil 7 following its big E3 reveal, with many wondering if the shift to a first person perspective might be a change too far for the series.
Thankfully, we’ve finally gotten our first good look at combat, and it certainly has that classic Resi vibe. I’m not talking the run and gun bullshit of latter games either – this is old school, baby.
Check out the protagonist encounter one of Resi 7’s twisted bad guys in the video below.
It’s interesting to note that aiming and firing don’t look easy, which is great – it wasn’t easy to do in the original Resident Evil games, and I can’t imagine using a gun is that simple in reality either.
The built-in limitations mean that – similar to the old tank controls – we’ll feel far more vulnerable in the face of the enemy, which should definitely make things pretty terrifying.
Of course, it doesn’t help that our foe gets right back up after being shot, implying that the mysterious family we’ve seen in previous trailers will be some of the only villains in the game.
Personally, I’m getting a real Nemesis vibe from the above footage – an unstoppable foe that can appear at any time to ruin your day? Sign me up.
The second video (above) confirms something else that we’ve known for a long time: Herbs are back in Resident Evil 7.
Naturally, healing yourself with anything else in a Resi game would be absolute madness, so it’s great to see this handy greenery make a return.
Shaking things up slightly, however, the herbs can now be combined with various other items to make things like ‘soothing balm’ which help with disinfecting wounds and treating piles. We’ll probably use it more for the former, to be honest.
Resident Evil 7 comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24, 2017.
