School Bans Shorts But Says Boys Could Wear Skirts Instead

A school has told boys who find it too hot to wear trousers in the summer months should wear a skirt instead as part of a ‘gender-neutral’ uniform policy.

Oxfordshire’s Chiltern Edge Secondary School has outlawed boys from wearing shorts in favour of skirts, much to the temperament of the public.

Last year, the school introduced a ‘more formal’ uniform policy that claimed the only acceptable leg wear was trousers or skirts.

Bemused by the change, parent Alastair Vince-Porteous asked school, staff if his son could wear tailored shorts. Their answer? No. That is NOT part of the policy.

Mr Vince-Porteous told MailOnline:

I was told shorts are not part of the uniform. It’s a shame we can’t be more grown up about it, we aren’t asking for ra-ra skirts or skinny jeans, just grey tailored shorts for two months a year, it’s not a big deal.

Fellow parent Joanne Muday said:

I know that in the past other schools have worn skirts so I asked if my son was able to do that – and the school said yes. It’s nuts to make the kids wear blazers and ties when it gets very hot.

Headteacher Moira Green said:

In September 2017, with the support of parents, Chiltern Edge made the decision to move to a more formal uniform. This has been a success. Maiden Erlegh Trust, in preparation for September 2018, wholeheartedly support Chiltern Edge’s adoption of a more formal uniform.

The social media reaction has been in full support of the boys being able to wear standard shorts.

One Twitter user wrote:

I’m still fuming about that Oxfordshire school banning boys from wearing shorts as they are not “gender neutral” but they can wear skirts as they are “gender neutral”. Horse shit! Boys & girls wear shorts. Boys do not wear skirts. Pathetic school.

Another asked:

A school in Oxfordshire has banned boys from wearing shorts but will let them wear skirts. Has the headteacher gone mad?

So in an age of, *don’t insist anyone does anything*, a school is insisting boys wear skirts if they’re too hot for trousers.. ? #Malevolent

Schoolboys told wear skirts NOT shorts when it’s too hot for trousers.

Not too long ago, boys at the Isca academy in Exeter of the weather being ‘too hot for long trousers’ and asked to wear shorts instead. Their request was refused so some pupils turned up the following morning in skirts which they’d borrowed from their friends and sisters.

The following day, their protest had grown and dozens joined in support by also wearing skirts. One boy said he had been told on the day the skirt was too short and his legs too hairy – so some of them bought razors and shaved their legs.

Another boy was also wearing a skirt – he said the protest had started with ‘five boys wearing skirts’ but he expected hundreds to join in – he also added that he appreciated the ‘nice breeze’.

I suppose there’s ways around it. But still, ultimately, banning shorts from school kids is IMHO outrageous.
