Two drunk mates who thwarted a robbery when they snatched the keys out of the getaway vehicle and chased off the suspects, have become an Internet sensation after video footage of the incident went viral.

James Ross-Munroe and Kane Wiblen were heading home after having a few beers when they spotted the suspects stealing from a nearby Oporto’s restaurant, reports the Mirror.

CCTV footage and mobile phone video filmed by Kane, posted on Facebook, show the dramatic moment when the two Aussies realised “they’re robbing the joint”.

And the incredible footage shows the moment the topless James, clearly slightly worse for wear, stumbles over and snatches the keys out of the attempted robbers’ getaway car.

The shirtless, flip-flop wearing badass then chases the suspects away from the scene, after a brief scuffle.

The incredible incident has become a viral sensation since it was posted on social media yesterday, racking up over 2 million views and more than 25,000 shares.

Now, the lads have spoken out about their new found fame.

Speaking to 7 News, Kane Wiblen said:

I thought this is a good opportunity. I had my phone still out. I thought oh I’m going to make a nice video of this. People from overseas, all different countries have been sending me nice messages saying good on yous.

The Operto restaurant staff were also happy with the lads’ efforts to help and Kane even got a free Bondi chili burger as a reward. All in a day’s work for these guys!
