A student who went missing has been found after surviving for an month in an Alabama forest on berries and wild mushrooms.

Lisa Theris, a radiology student from Louisville, was found covered in mud and scratches after she ran away from two men in her company.

Police were told that she ran into the wilderness and as she was unfamiliar with the area the 25-year-old had lost her bearings. For an month Theris survived by drinking water from streams and eating whatever the land could provide before se was found 28 days later, suffering from food deprivation.

She was found last Saturday afternoon on the side of a highway with no shoes, purse or phone.

She explained to police that the two men she was with were planning to break into a hunting lodge, but she wanted no part of it. Instead Theris ran deeper into the forest where she began her month-long ordeal.

As reported by WSFA, Sheriff Raymond Rodgers said that Lisa was:

… not familiar with this area and apparently on the night she ran, she went into the woods at night and got lost.

The men she was with Manley Davis and Randall Oswald, aged 31 and 36 years old, were successful in breaking in but were arrested and charged with burglary, they were also accused of stealing £31,000 worth of goods from the lodge. But not before being questioned on the disappearance of Theris on 23 July.

Rodgers stated that:

We want to make sure her health is good so we got her on to the hospital. We did not interrogate her at that time

When she was found by police Theris had lost around 50 pounds in weight.

Naturally her family were ecstatic over her return, her brother Will posted a picture of her on Facebook with a caption saying:

28 days stranded out in the wilderness and Lisa is still standing, strongest person I know.

She is standing strong and full of jokes as ever…

However her sister Elizabeth told a local news team that Lisa is still:

… severely weakened, she is in pain, she is emaciated. There is not an inch of her that has not been affected.

However in spite of this, it’s still an amazing feat that Lisa endured nearly a whole month, surviving off nothing but what land provided. Most people in that position would probably curl into the fetal position and pray to be pushed back into their mother’s womb.

Speaking to local media outlet WTVY,Bullock County Sheriff Sergeant Chad Faulkner said that in his 15 year career he’s never seen anything like it, even going so far as to label it a ‘miracle’. Furthermore he commended Lisa on her incredible will to live.
