Student banned from prom for choosing to wear a suit

The student, who identifies as non-binary, was banned for their outfit of choice.

A student ended up being banned from their school prom after they chose to wear a suit to the special occasion.

B Hayes, from Nashville, US - who identifies as non-binary - decided to wear a suit for their prom at Nashville Christian School.

A school prom is supposed to be a rather special occasion, as it marks the end of a chapter in any students life.

But unfortunately for Hayes, the occasion was ruined after Nashville Christian School banned them from attending the senior prom for refusing to stick to the strict dress code, as per NPR.

Angered, Hayes took to Instagram to explain the full story, alongside a picture of they holding a rather powerful message.

In the picture, Hayes is seen standing with a sign that reads: 'They wouldn't let me in because I'm in a suit', as some of their classmates jump into the back of a car heading to the prom in the background.

Hayes captioned the Instagram post with: "My name is B Hayes. I'm 18 years old and i’ve been attending Nashville Christian School for 13 years.

"My senior prom was today and I wasn’t allowed in the doors because I was wearing a suit. I should not have to conform to femininity to attend my senior prom.

"I will not compromise who I am to fit in a box. who are you to tell us what it means to be a woman?"

Nashville Christian School has quite a strict set of beliefs on gender, as per its online handbook.

One particular line stands out: "Identity — God created us as male or female, and we will live consistently with the gender God chose for us."

In a statement provided to UNILAD, Nashville Christian School said it "has established dress requirements for daily school attendance and at our special events. All students and families are aware of and sign an agreement to these guidelines when they enroll."

The school added that dress code requirements were communicated to students and parents ahead of the prom.

The school say students and parents were warned about the dress code prior to the prom.

"The school's expectations regarding appropriate prom attire were communicated to this student and the student's family in advance of the prom," the statement continued.

"While we certainly respect a student's right to disagree, all of our students know from our school handbook that when they do not follow such expectations at school-sponsored events, they may be asked to leave."

The post has blown up on Instagram since it was upload last weekend, with nearly 25,000 likes on the social media platform.

People have been left outraged that the school would ban Hayes from the prom just because of an outfit choice.
