A new survey has revealed the most dangerous place to go on holiday, at least according to the number of homicides.
There are many factors in determining whether a location is safe to visit. Political instability, natural disasters, and the flora and fauna are all things which should be taken into consideration before setting off.
For example, North Korea is probably not a wise choice for a weekend getaway. Especially when you consider the history of tourists being arrested even while on the government mandated tours operated in the country.

Likewise, active warzones are probably also best avoided. Same goes for fallout zones around nuclear disasters.
However, one list from World of Statistics has created a list of cities which it would be unwise to visit based on the number of homicides. They are listed as how many there are annually per 100,000 people in 2022.
So who get's the top spot?
Colima on the Pacific coast of Mexico, with a shocking 181.9 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022.

But perhaps what is even more shocking is that Mexico makes up nearly all of the top ten cities for the number of homicides. Only one out of the top ten is not in Mexico.
That is New Orleans in the United States of America.
It's perhaps tragically not a surprise that Mexico features so heavily on the list. Disappearances have become commonplace across the country.
The discovery of mass graves in Mexico is also an awful regular occurrence. Families with missing loved ones frequently turn up to the exhumation of such sites. It's not because they're hoping their loved one will be alive, but that they will have a body to bury.

According to the BBC, some 25,000 people were killed in Mexico in 2017 alone. This was one of the most violent years in the country for decades.
Cartels can carry terrifying arsenals of weaponry, and authorities are unable to make any effective headway in confronting them.
In 2017, a group of mothers arrived at a site in Veracruz, fearing that as many as 400 people could be buried in shallow graves in the area.
Mexico has historically had a big tourism industry, and it's easy to see why. The country's incredible natural beauty, the food, and the culture capture the imaginations of people across the globe.

But behind the idyllic all-inclusive resorts and city AirBnBs there is a country which is in crisis. With that in mind, it's tragically no surprise that Mexico dominates this list to such an extent.
