A man who was ‘ranting and raving’ while shouting hate speech on a train attacked three people who attempted to intervene with a knife, killing two and injuring one.
Emergency crews in Portland, Oregon responded to the attack at around 4:30 p.m. Friday and found the three victims, Fox 12 reports.
First responders attempted life-saving measures on one man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim was taken to hospital but he later died from his injuries, the third and final victim was stabbed but survived and is currently receiving further treatment.
Witnesses at the scene told police that the man suspected of the attack was ‘ranting and raving’ while yelling ‘hate speech or bias language’ at two young Muslim girls on the train.
The three victims of his attack attempted to stop his hate speech but according to a Portland Police Bureau spokesman’s claims they were ‘viciously’ attacked by the man.
Following the attack the suspect ran away but was caught by the Providence Portland Medical Center. He’s since received medical treatment and been turned over to homicide detectives.
Police claim that the suspect is white and between 20 and 40 years old. His identity has not been released at present.
The FBI are offering to help Portland police in the investigation.
