Ukraine: Eerie Footage Captures Just How Desolate Kyiv Streets Are As Putin's Invasion Rages On

Eerie footage has shown empty streets in Kyiv as Russia's invasion continues.

An eerie video has emerged online that shows just how desolate Kyiv streets are, as Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine continues into its second day.

The footage, shared to Twitter by journalist Christopher Miller, shows the virtually-deserted and silent city streets.

The eerie silence is then punctured by the wailing of an air raid as Miller makes his way down the street.

Miller captioned the video, 'Moments ago in Kyiv. Sirens and empty streets. Never in 12 years have I seen it so bare and eerie.'

The video comes as Russian forces continue their advance into Ukraine, with Russian troops reportedly having been seen on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv.

While the streets remain virtually empty, reports of Ukrainian soldiers taking up positions around Kyiv have emerged, with Russian troops having infiltrated the northern district of Obolon.

Obolon is a residential area not far from Kyiv's parliament and city centre, and citizens in the area were told by city officials to stay at home to avoid 'active military operations', the BBC reports.

Gunfire was also said to be heard near government buildings, as per the Telegraph.

On Facebook, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence stated, 'We urge citizens to inform us of troop movements, to make Molotov cocktails, and neutralise the enemy.'

Last night, February 24, families in Kyiv took to bomb shelters and Metro stations as aerial attacks hit the city. The attacks hit the highly-populated Pozniake area, and at least eight people are said to have been injured.

One Kyiv resident told the BBC, 'Putin, we want to see you slaughtered like an animal.'

Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said Moscow was ready to talk about the situation 'as soon as the armed forces of Ukraine respond to our call and lay down their arms'.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier today that Russia wanted to 'destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state'.

'According to the information we have, the enemy has designated me as target number one. My family is target number two,' he continued. Despite this, Zelensky has said he will stay in Kyiv.

Around Ukraine, there have been incredible acts of bravery. One group of 13 border guards on an island in the Black Sea refused to surrender to a Russian warship, and were subsequently all killed in a bombardment. Zelensky has said they will all receive posthumous war hero honours.
