Restaurant hits back after customer complains about his meal costing $78 at Newark Airport

A restaurant has taken to social media to fire back at a customer after they complained about the price of their airport meal.

A restaurant has hit back at a customer after they complained about the price of their airport meal.

We all refuse to pay the additional fee to upgrade our seat so we can sit next to our mate, but when it comes to splashing out on a hideously overpriced drink at the airport, there's never a second thought.

There's no denying it, airport food and drink is extortionate, but we simply wouldn't feel like we're on holiday mode without chowing into a burger even before catching a 4am flight.

But one traveller who paid a whopping $79 for a meal at Newark Airport, New Jersey has been slammed by the restaurant after they took to social media to criticize the pricing.

New York Times opinion columnist David Brooks took to X - formerly known as Twitter - to complain about the meal he paid for while at Newark Airport.

The photograph shows a tray of burger, chips and salad, accompanied by a cold drink.

The caption reads: "This meal just cost me $78 at Newark Airport. This is why Americans think the economy is terrible."

Despite Brooks not revealing which exact restaurant he dined in for the $78 meal, the restaurant has since come forward itself.

This meal cost $78, according to David Brooks.

Yesterday (Thursday, 21 September), 1911 Smoke House Barbeque took to Facebook to respond to Brooks' post.

The restaurant - which has a branch located in Terminal A of the airport - shared an article by the NJ.com about Brooks' post and commented: "Looks like someone was knocking back some serious drinks.

"Bar tab was almost 80 percent and he’s complaining about the cost of his meal keep drinking buddy - we get paid off everything."

A person in the comments also shared a screenshot and links proving a burger and fries at the chain comes to a total of $17.

The restaurant has since created a poster for a new meal deal - which, you guessed it, is inspired by Brook's order.

The poster reads: "Super delicious burger with fries and a double shot of whiskey."

The restaurant has crossed out the price of $78, replacing it with the listing $17.78.

And yes, it's even named it the 'D Brooks Special,' alongside the hashtag #Youcantbeatourmeat."

The caption to the post reads: "Just in lol…. For real tho!"

The restaurant really went for it.

Whether the restaurant is actually selling the deal at its Newark Airport site who knows - don't worry, we've just asked them.

Or maybe you'll just have to book a vacation and take a trip there to find out for yourself.

UNILAD has reached out to Brooks and 1911 Smoke House Barbeque for comment.
