Delta offers 13 passengers up to $4,000 to get off overbooked flight

Why does this never happen to me?

Over a dozen passengers were offered up to $4,000 to get off a flight that had been overbooked.

The Delta Airlines flight was set to travel from Boston to Rome, Italy, when a member of the cabin crew announced that there were too many people on board. Check it out:

In footage shared on social media, a flight attendant can be heard speaking over the tannoy, explaining the situation to folks.

She says: “You can go shopping via gift card…I can’t, there has to be one passenger who wants to take one for the team?"

While no one appears too keen to get involved, the woman asks if anyone would do it for $3,500.

"Come on guys $3,500 can somebody take one for the team!" she says, explaining it's a first come, first serve offer.

Passengers were offered thousands to get off the flight.

After the second rallying call, two people, at least, can be seen standing up and walking up to the front of the aircraft, seemingly to accept.

The clip was posted with the caption: "13 passengers on an overbooked #Delta flight from #Boston to #Rome were given between $2,000-$4,000 plus hotel rooms to voluntarily give up their seat on the plane due to the flight being overbooked."

Since the clip was shared on TikTok, it's been viewed over 375,000 times, with people piling into the comments to offer their thoughts - mainly of utter disbelief.

Two were seen jumping up.

"I settled for $800 once from delta i’d sprint for $3k," gasped one person.

Another commented: "Oh I would’ve taken that in a heartbeat $3,500 voucher! Come on!"

"That’s crazy $3500 would lowkey be life changing... 4 months of free rent," put a third.

While someone else added: "Why does this never happen to me? I could have paid my rent that month."

One viewer recalled their own story of something similar that happened to them.

People were stunned.

They put: “My flight to Rome had lots of people wanting to take it."

With someone else joking: "I hope they do this when I leave Vegas to go home."

And another said: “I would get up so quick byeeee."

UNILAD has contacted Delta Airlines for comment.

Last year, a woman was offered $3,000 to give up her seat on a flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Florida’s West Palm Beach.

Speaking to CNBC Make It, the 30-year-old real estate broker said: “While we were boarding, a gate agent announced, ’We need 22 people to get off this flight. We’re offering $1,300 to any volunteers'.”
