House Speaker took daughter to purity ball where she made a virginity pledge to him

For those who have happily led their lives up to this point not knowing what a 'purity ball' is, it's a formal event where a daughter pledges to her father that she won't have sex until marriage.

Think of it like wearing a chastity ring, but you dress up in black tie and make a public pledge to your dad in front of a room full of other fathers and daughters.

The practice is popular in the conservative Christian community in the US, with daughters often wearing white gowns reminiscent of a wedding dress.

The video shows Rep Mike Johnson and his daughter Hannah at such an event, including her pledging to him not to have sex before marriage.

Hannah, who was 13 years old at the time, pledged to her father to 'make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my future husband, and my future children ... to a lifetime of purity, including sexual purity.'

Johnson can be seen nodding along in agreement as she makes the pledge.

An interview clip shows Johnson's wife Kelly explaining the family's approach to sex education, or rather, lack of it.

She said: "We don't talk to her about contraception. Sex before marriage is simply out of the question."

Explaining his political positions, Johnson said: "Someone asked me today in the media, they said, 'It's curious, people are curious: What does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?' I said, 'Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it. That's my worldview'."

Previously a relatively little-known congressman from Louisiana, Johnson was elected Speaker of the House in October 2023.

He was the Republican party's fourth nominee for the position and broke a three-week-long deadlock in the house where it couldn't advance any legislation.

In his first speech following his election as speaker, Johnson said: “At this time of great crisis, it is our duty to work together, as previous generations of great leaders have, to face these great challenges and solve these great problems."

Rachel Scott of ABC News also asked Johnson about his support for Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election, and was told to 'shut up' and 'go away' by Rep. Virginia Foxx.
