Harrowing footage released by the New York Police Department shows an officer breaking down in tears after encountering a man standing on an overpass ledge.
The footage, which some viewers may find distressing, was shared on the official X account for the NYPD on Thursday (19 October), after the incident took place earlier this month.
The clip featured Officers Fayette and Mata as they encountered the man who had climbed on to the ledge on the outer side of the overpass, on the other side of a large fence which separated the road from the edge.

Officer Fayette could be heard speaking to the man on the bodycam footage shared by the department, telling him: “I’ve been in your shoes, man. It’s not worth it."
The officer told the man there are 'solutions', adding: "There is a way to ensure you get out of this situation.”
Fayette insisted that the city has resources available to help those struggling with their mental health.
"We will do anything in our power to help you," he said.
Both Fayette and Mata continued talking to the man as officers from the Emergency Service Unit were able to climb out to the edge of the overpass and make their way to the man.

According to the NYPD, the officers continued speaking for nearly 40 minutes until the man was rescued by the workers, who managed to secure him on the ledge.
As soon as the man was secured, Fayette made his way away from the ledge and broke down in tears, crouching on the floor as he became overwhelmed by the ordeal.
Officers were quick to show their support by putting their arms around him as he cried.
The post on X noted that the video was just one example of the work carried out by police officers, who 'frequently interact with people having the worst day of their lives'.
Internet users praised the officers for their work and how they helped to rescue the man after the footage, which the NYPD described as 'harrowing', was shared online.

"God Bless everyone that contributed to saving that man’s life," one X user wrote, adding: "And a big thank you to the officers that patiently and lovingly spoke to him."
"Thank you Officer. I cried with you. You did an amazing thing today and probably realized how important you are in other's lives. I hope you stay in touch with the man you saved. He will always need you," another person wrote.
