Wenger May Have To Play Worst Ever XI Against Liverpool

After pipping arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur to second place last season, Arsenal will be hoping to go one better this time round.

But they will have to start the hard way, as a number of their top players will miss the opening game of the new campaign against Liverpool thanks to their international exploits this summer.

Frenchmen Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny, along with Germany’s Mesut Ozil and Wales key man Aaron Ramsey, are all on holiday after reaching the latter stages of the European Championships, while Alexis Sanchez picked up ankle injury in the final of the Copa America.

The Chile superstar is set to miss the opening stages of the season with the problem, leaving Arsene Wenger with a selection headache.

Here’s what Wenger could be forced to go for:

Arsenal lineup

Wenger will be hoping his new signings can get him off to a decent start, although not many seem to expect much of Japanese striker Takuma Asano.

Joel Campbell has struggled to make any real impact since joining Arsenal in 2011, while Theo Walcott’s career has gone backwards in the past 12 months.

Danny Welbeck will miss the start of the season with the knee injury that kept him out of Euro 2016, and Arsenal are being continually frustrated in their search for a striker.

Jamie Vardy has turned them down, Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann appear to be far too expensive, and a move for Gonzalo Higuain would also cost a huge fee.

A front three of Campbell, Theo and Chuba Akpom isn’t going to strike fear into Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, but Wenger has previous experience of managing Francis Jeffers and Jeremie Aliadiere, so maybe he can use his experience on this one.

Alternatively, the Gunners can just wait for Simon Mignolet to make a few blunders, so all hope is not lost.
