One out of every seven people in the world live on just $2 a day. That’s one billion people all together.
They suffer, starve, and many of them die due to the dire straits their poverty has forced them into.
But what would, say, the richest man on the planet do if he HAD to live on $2 a day.
Enter Bill Gates who almost certainly requires no introduction.
As one of the most forward thinking minds of our times, what would Mr. Gates, who currently has a net worth of over $87 billion, do if he had just $2 a day.
He’d raise chickens, he explained in a blog post.
More specifically, the mastermind behind microsoft, wrote:
There’s no single right answer, of course, and poverty looks different in different places.
But through my work with the foundation, I’ve met many people in poor countries who raise chickens, and I have learned a lot about the ins and outs of owning these birds. It’s pretty clear to me that just about anyone who’s living in extreme poverty is better off if they have chickens.
Apparently there are four reasons Bill would invest in chickens. They’re cheap and easy to take care of, they’re a good investment, eating chicken (and eggs) is good for you, and they generate income which can be empowering to women – because ‘they are a woman’s animal’.
Bill concluded his blog by writing: ‘It sounds funny, but I mean it when I say that I am excited about chickens’.
I know what I’m spending my payday wages on!
