A white woman in Missouri who stopped a black man from entering his own apartment block has now been fired from her job.
24-year-old D’Arreion Toles had been returning home from his job as CEO of Global Wealth Insights Corporation. However, his access to the Elder Shirt Lofts building in St. Louis was physically blocked by his neighbour, 32-year-old Hilary Brooke Thornton.
Ms Thornton, who was accompanied by a small dog, stood in the entrance way and repeatedly demanded to see proof that Mr Toles lived in the luxury apartment building; even asking which unit he lived in.
When he finally managed to push past him into the building, Ms Thornton followed him into the elevator and right up to his front door. A police officer then turned up at Mr Toles’ door approximately half an hour later, having been called by an ‘uncomfortable’ Ms Thornton.
Mr Toles – who remained calm throughout the altercation – managed to film the incident, which he later shared to Facebook with the following message:
To Be A Black man in America, & Come home,
Women tries to stop me from coming into my building because she feels insecure,
Downtown St. Louis luxury loft, because she don’t feel that I belong, never really thought this would happen to me, but it did!
Then 30 mins later police knock on my door, because she called! I was shocked this is America in 2018!
The shocking confrontation has since gone viral, having been viewed over four million times, MailOnline reports.
Tribeca Luxury Apartments – who do not manage the apartment building in question – have since fired Ms. Thornton from her jobs as a realtor, making the following statement:
The Tribeca-STL family is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds,
We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company.
Mr Toles later took to Facebook to thank those who had offered words of support:
I want to say thanks for all the love and support, it is really hitting me a little bit more now, but I most say I will turn this negative into a positive Future for the world I influence, & don’t bash the women just send her positive waves of energy, and let’s be great people this our world & this message is to everyone of all ages/ races/ colors/!
We only get one life so let’s make the most of it & be great, no time for negativity!
Ms Thornton has become known on social media as ‘Apartment Patty’, the latest individual in a string of white women who have called the police on black men and boys without a legitimate reason.
On October 10, Teresa Klein – who has been nicknamed ‘Corner Store Caroline’ called 911 on a 9-year-old black boy she alleged he had touched her bottom at a Brooklyn deli. Surveillance footage showed the child’s bag had in fact just accidentally grazed her.
