The image of a frail and fragile man sprawled out on his bed, appearing in a frail and fragile state has been shared by his wife in the hope that it could save his life.
In the photo 59-year-old Ronnie Lord is seen lying down and dangerously underweight due to the tumours in his mouth and throat which have left him unable to eat.
The photo was taken by his wife, Rebecca, who desperately wants to bring Ronnie back to Britain so he can receive the treatment he so desperately needs.
Ronnie moved to the Philippines after retiring, however, seven months ago he complained about a sore throat which has now worsened to the point where he can no longer swallow.
Doctors discovered he has tumours in his mouth and throat, and have advised him to go through scans and seek specialist cancer care.
Unfortunately, healthcare in the Philippines is not free and Ronnie has run out of money to receive any further treatment. This is why Rebecca and his sister Karen have launched an appeal page to help pay for his medical bills until he is well enough to fly back to the UK.
Karen, aged 57, spoke about her horror when she woke up to find a picture of her brother in such dire health conditions.
Speaking to The Mirror she said:
If I would have known about it earlier it wouldn’t have progressed the way it did but Ronnie never told me. I spoke to him about seven months ago and he mentioned he had a sore throat but that was it.
I woke up to that picture last week and I can’t describe how I felt. It’s so sad, I knew I just needed to do everything possible to help him. It’s absolutely shocking.
Ronnie didn’t even know the picture had been sent, his wife sent it out of desperation.
He is a very proud and stubborn man and obviously didn’t want people to know he needed money.
Money raised so far has helped pay for a doctor’s visit, bacterial mouthwash, painkillers and food supplies. He will also be checked into hospital tomorrow after receiving $2,000 donation from a relative in the States. But his family says more money is needed.
Karen is hoping to raise as much money as possible to make sure Ronnie gets the best care possible. So far her appeal, which has been set up by family friend Alana Altham, has raised over £2,750 just days after being launched. Ronnie’s friends and family are hoping to raise at least £15,000.
On his appeal page, it says:
Ronnie has told family that they have ran out of money now for any further medical treatment.
Ronnie needs further tests, scans and treatment to determine exactly what type of tumours he has. It costs around £250 just to be admitted to the hospital and about £50 a night to stay in hospital.
Then individual pieces of equipment, drips, medication and treatment has to paid for seperately.
Family have contacted The British Consulate, The British Embassy and The Home office. They have no monetary funds but can help with advice/paperwork/passports etc. They did say that he cannot fly home without a fit to travel certificate.”
Ronnie was born and raised in the Ribble Valley in Longridge in Lancashire but moved to the Philippines to retire.
He is married to his second wife Rebecca and has a nine-year-old little daughter called Shanieka.
