Terrified passengers run to safety after Japan Airlines plane burst into flames as it landed

A Japan Airlines plane landed at Tokyo's Haneda airport while on fire.

Japan Airlines Flight 516 had departed from New Chitose Airport on the northern island of Hokkaido at around 4:00pm local time and landed at Haneda airport on Tuesday evening (January 2) at 5:40pm.

Footage of the plane bursting into flames as it landed has been uploaded to social media, as well as clips of the moment passengers inside the aircraft realized it was on fire.

Footage and images of the plane in flames were first shared by Japanese national broadcaster NHK.

Emergency services could be seen taking to the runway to put out the fire, with the majority of the aircraft in flames and smoke billowing from the windows.

Clips and images have since been shared onto X - formerly known as Twitter - by a passenger who was onboard the flight.

One of the videos shows passengers inside the aircraft surrounded by thick smoke.

The caption reads: 'I thought I was going to die."

Live images from the scene showed passengers onboard the aircraft being evacuated via inflatable slides before running to safety.

Japan Airlines report 'all 379 people' on the plane have been safely evacuated - including 367 passengers and 12 members of crew - however 'concerns remain for several in another aircraft,' as per the BBC.

The airline also said, as per NHK, it is 'currently assessing the extent of the damage' - the plane ending up completely engulfed by the flames despite rescue crews' best efforts to control the blaze and remaining on fire two hours later.

Authorities said the aircraft collided with a coast guard plane, broadcaster NHK reports.

Japan's Coast Guard said its plane was on its way to Niigata Airport to deliver aid to those in Noto peninsula - the location hit by an earthquake on New Year's Day that's killed at least 48 people.

It's reported there were six people onboard the coast guard plane. One - the pilot - was evacuated safely, however, the five others were initially unaccounted for Japan's Coast Guard stated.

Kyodo News has since reported the rest of the five crew have been found but their condition remains unknown.

The collision between the two aircraft is currently 'under investigation'.

A spokesperson said all runways at Haneda Airport have been closed and all flights suspended.
