The ‘red telephone’ will be lifted once more as President Trump plans a phone call with his Russian counterpart this evening.

With his long-standing plans to repair relations with Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader’s personal spokesman has confirmed that the two may organise to meet in person.

Trump’s official ‘counsellor to the president’, Kellyanne Conway has also revealed that they will also potentially discuss scrapping economic sanctions against Moscow and how to counter terrorism.

Despite the talk being top secret, the Kremlin’s Dmitry Peskov let slip a few of the potential topics.

Peskov said:

This is the first telephone contact after president Trump took office, so one can hardly expect from such a telephone conversation any substantive contacts on all the issues on the agenda.

Obama’s eight year’s in power led to a very frosty relationship with Russia because he enforced travel bans on top Russian officials close to Putin, froze their assets and outlawed American firms from doing business with big Russian firms after Moscow seized Crimea from Ukraine.

When Conway was asked whether removing sanctions against Russia would be discussed, she said ‘all of that is under consideration’.

Conway said:

I assume they will discuss, in the interests of their respective countries, how to come together and work together on issues where you can find common ground and where these two nations could maybe defeat radical Islamic terrorism.

British Prime Minister Theresa May recently met with the new American president and warned him to ‘beware’ of going soft on Russia.
