Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction – a 46-year-old television comedian with no prior political experience just won the presidential elections in Guatemala by an absolute landslide.
Ironically, Jimmy Morales once played a hapless cowboy who accidentally becomes president on the big screen and now he’s the real deal.
In these real life version of events, Morales took more than a third of the vote, sweeping to victory with 72 per cent and easily beating out his opponent, former First Lady Sandra Torres.
As reported by Reuters, the comedian has primarily capitalised on a corruption scandal which has resulted in national hostility towards the country’s old politicians, to achieve the unlikely win.
In fact, Morales had been atop the election polls since early September, after President Otto Pérez Molina stepped down in the face of a bribery scandal.
Speaking ahead of his victory, Morales said:
As President, I received a mandate, and the mandate of the people of Guatemala is to fight against the corruption that is consuming us. God bless and thank you.
Some are pretty (and quite understandably) concerned that Morales doesn’t appear to have any experience or ideas but it’s a strong indication of how many people vote based on personalities rather than policies!
