A couple received some shocking news after attending a fertility clinic in Mississippi and what the doctor told them is truly disturbing.
The couple had been struggling to conceive, so sought the help of a doctor, but the response they got was not one they were prepared for or could be in any way expecting.
The pair turned up at the clinic wanting to know more about the vitro-fertilisation process when the doctor dropped the bombshell of their lives upon them.
He ran standard DNA tests and instead of being able to offer them help and advice on conception, he shockingly revealed they were actually biological twins.
The doctor – who was probably just as taken aback as the couple were on delivering this piece of news, and cannot be identified to protect the couple’s identity, told the Mississippi Herald:
During the in vitro fertilization process, we take a DNA sample from both the male and female to get a profile of their genetic backgrounds.
It’s just a routine thing, and we wouldn’t normally check to see if there was a relationship between the two samples, but in this case the lab assistant involved was shocked by the similarity of each profile.
However, looking closer at the samples, I noticed there were way too many similarities. With this in mind, I was convinced that both patients were fraternal twins.
Bizarrely, when the doctor tentatively broke the news to the couple, their first response was to break down into a fit of laughter.
The husband said that a lot of people remarked on the fact that they shared the same birthdays, and looked similar to each other, but he said it was just a funny coincidence and that the couple were definitely not related.
The poor man had no idea.
Despite their unusual response, the doctor needed to proceed in telling them the unnerving and bewildering truth, no matter how hard that may be.
The biological parents of the couple had died in a car crash when the couple were infants, and they had no close family willing to adopt them.
They’d been taken into state care, and were adopted out to separate families. Due to a filing error, neither foster family had ever been told that their adopted child had a twin.
The couple – who as one of them readily admits, look pretty similar – met in college and grew close over their childhood experiences.
The doctor explained to Mississippi Herald:
I really hope they can work something out. For me, it’s a particularly unusual case because my job is all about helping couples conceive a child.
This is the first time in my career that I’ve been glad I haven’t succeeded in that regard.
It would certainly be the shock of your life if the person you married turned out to be your twin… what are the odds on that?
The couple are now giving serious thought to their marriage and how realistic their relationship is, given what they now know.
