American singer-songwriter John Mayer has been rushed to hospital for an emergency life-saving operation.

A representative of the singer has said that he was hospitalised earlier this morning and is currently undergoing surgery at a hospital in New Orleans.

Currently touring with the band Dead & Company, Mayer was scheduled to perform a show tonight at the Smoothie King Centre in New Orleans.

The performance has now been postponed with the band saying that ticket holders will be updated when the show has been rearranged.

Mayer is having an appendectomy which is a common emergency surgery that’s performed to treat appendicitis, an inflammatory condition of the appendix.

It appears that the illness and surgery is unexpected although no additional details have been provided, TMZ reports.

The band’s account tweeted:

Early this morning, Tuesday, December 5th, John Mayer was admitted into the hospital for an emergency appendectomy forcing the Dead & Company December 5th concert in New Orleans to be postponed.

All tickets for the December 5 show will be honoured for the rescheduled date. Information on the rescheduled date will be announced as soon as possible.

Should ticket holders choose to seek a refund, they will be available at point of purchase.

It is unclear whether the two remaining shows on their current tour, on December 7 in Orlando and December 8 in Florida, will also be postponed.

40-year-old Mayer has been performing on guitar with Dead & Company since they formed in 2015.

The band also includes former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart.

Bill Kreutzmann, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti finish off the line-up.

Fans of Mayer have been wishing him a speedy recovery on social media.

Dr. Cosmic Charlie wrote on Twitter:

Here’s to a fully and speedy recovery John Mayer. Sorry to hear your ‘little buddy’ is having medical troubles, Bob Weir.

Hope there are no complications. And, thanks for everything to all of you Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.

Chuck Kuenzler remained positive, adding:

Sending good vibes to John Mayer! Speedy recovery brother!

Sorry to fellow Dead Heads who won’t get a show tonight but there will be more shows.

Mayer has also been touring with his own band recently and it is currently unclear what will happen with these scheduled shows.

We wish Mayer all the best with his surgery and hope he has an easy road to recovery.
