Former New England Patriot tight end, Aaron Hernandez reportedly wrote a message on his forehead before allegedly committing suicide.

The 27-year-old American footballer was found unresponsive in his prison cell on Wednesday morning, just after 3am and was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster about an hour later.

ESPN reports say Hernandez had referenced a popular bible verse on his forehead, prior to taking his own life.

John 3:16 reads:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Prison officials confirmed that Hernandez was found hanged in the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, where he was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction.

Authorities are also investigating the possibility that Hernandez smoked synthetic marijuana prior to his death.

Department of Correction spokesman Christopher Fallon stressed the investigation is ongoing and officials had been unaware of Hernandez’ suicidal thoughts.
