Arsenal Find New Target As Defender Search Hits New Low

After being turned down by as many defenders as they were strikers earlier in the transfer window, Arsenal have found another centre back target.

And he’s not the biggest of names.

According to The MirrorMonaco defender Marcel Tisserand is the latest man linked with a move to the Emirates, and it’s came as something of a surprise as he was on the verge of joining Espanyol.

The DR Congo international has only made six league appearances for Monaco in the three years he’s been there – mainly because he’s been on loan at Toulouse and Lens in that period.

He was a regular for Toulouse last season, making 38 league appearances, and can play at right back or centre back.

Maybe Arsene Wenger is hoping Tisserand can become another former Monaco player to become an Arsenal great, after Thierry Henry started his career there way back in 1992.

The move for the 23-year-old comes after the Gunners were asked to stump up £25 million for Jonny Evans – you could almost hear Tony Pulis laughing as West Bromwich Albion sent that email.

And Arsenal look to have also been priced out of a move for Shkodran Mustafi, who Valencia rate at £50 million.

That leaves only Rob Holding and Laurent Koscielny as the available centre backs for Wenger, with a trip to Watford on Saturday next up in the league.

There’s eight days left in the window, and the move for Tisserand stinks of a classic desperation move, just to get someone in before it’s too late.

If Tisserand does sign, it reminds me of the signings of Pascal Cygan and Gilles Grimandi from back in the day – defenders that could do a job, yes, but not the type that’s going to turn Arsenal into genuine title contenders.

With every passing day, Paul Merson’s rant rings truer in the ears of everyone who knows football – and when that happens, you know something’s wrong.
