Conor McGregor is working on an ‘element of surprise’ for his showdown with Floyd Mayweather next month, according to a two-time world champion.

The long-awaited fight, between the undefeated welterweight boxer Floyd Mayweather and reigning UFC Lightweight Champion McGregor is happening at the end of August.

Paulie Malignaggi, the former two-time world champion, was drafted in as a sparring partner for McGregor during training, and after eight rounds, said he was ‘impressed’ with what he saw and that there was a ‘method’ to McGregor’s madness.

Speaking to MMA Fighting Malignaggi said:

You come into the situation already knowing Conor has a big left hand, so if you’re fighting Conor, you’re probably gonna prepare for that left hand.

Obviously Conor is working on other things besides the left hand, so that there could be a surprise element too.

Without giving away too much, he’s effective at what he’s doing – there’s a method behind the madness – he and his team are working at it.

I’m sure it’ll be entertaining and fun.

McGregor is reportedly focusing solely on his offensive tactics and striking before he takes on one of the greatest defensive boxers of our time.

Malignaggi says he will continue to serve as one of McGregor’s regular sparring partners in the build up to the August 26th bout.

He told ESPN:

There was a lot of trash talking right away, a lot of fighting right away.

At the end, you look back on it, it was kind of fun – I don’t have many people who can match my trash talk, but Conor definitely can. It was making it a lot of fun.

It’s a brave but perhaps misguided route to go down, but McGregor isn’t taking the fight lightly and even got his coach to build a specially designed ring in preparation for the bout.

It’s looking good!
