It’s quickly becoming the transfer story that will dominate the summer.

Jamie Vardy has an offer on the table from Arsenal, and must now decide whether to jump ship or stay at Premier League Champions Leicester City.

The England striker is expected to make a decision after the European Championships, and the nation is split as to whether it would be a good move for the 29-year-old or not.

But one man who has his fingers crossed that the striker moves clubs is Andy Pilley, the chairman of Fleetwood Town.

That’s because Fleetwood inserted a sell-on clause in Vardy’s transfer to Leicester, entitling them to 25% of any future transfer fee, meaning the Cod Army will stand to receive a whopping £5m, should Vardy join Arsenal.

Speaking to BBC Radio, Pilley explained:

We knew he had a chance of playing in the Premier League and doing really well, so we insisted on that particular clause.

It’s not an unusual clause and the way that these clauses work is it rewards the smaller club.

Incidentally, what will happen if Jamie does move on, FC Halifax Town, who we bought Jamie from, will benefit significantly and that’s the way it filters down to smaller clubs.

I think it’s a really good way of working your contracts.

That definitely qualifies as good business, as £5m to a League One side who have just built a brand new training ground will certainly come in handy.

In a football world where multi-billionaire owners regularly piss away cash like it’s nothing, it’s nice to see this kind of savvy business from one of the country’s smaller clubs.

Maybe the likes of Mike Ashley and Sheikh Mansour could learn a thing or two from a man they’ve probably never heard of.
