As Paul Pogba closes in on a return to Manchester United, Juventus are on the lookout for a replacement.
The £100m deal for the Frenchman will give the Old Lady plenty of cash to throw around, and they have identified Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic as their first choice.
Matic rejoined Chelsea from Benfica after being used as a makeweight in the deal which saw David Luiz head to Stamford Bridge in a £25m deal back in 2011, but the Blues look likely to sell the Serbian again.
When Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea for a second spell as manager, he was shocked that the club had allowed Matic to leave and ordered them to buy him back.
But it seems they haven’t learned from their mistakes, and after signing N’Golo Kante for £30m recently, it looks like the 27-year-old will be allowed to leave for a second time.
Matic was a key part of Chelsea’s title winning 2014/15 season, but was one of many Blues players to suffer a dip in form that led to a tenth placed finish last year.
Massimiliano Allegri is willing to offer Matic a lifeline in Italy though, as he begins to spend the £100m that Juventus are likely to receive for Pogba.
A wedge of that is going on the transfer of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, and Matic will fill the midfield slot left by the Frenchman.
Should Matic not sign, Juventus may turn to Moussa Sissoko, who wants out of Newcastle United after dropping into the Championship last season.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is targeting four more signings as he builds a squad which he hopes can challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Blues have already signed Michy Batshuayi and Kante for their challenge, and will use any money from Matic to continue the reshuffle.
Looks like Pogba’s move to United is about to kick off a transfer merry-go-round.
