Newly engaged Meghan Markle was once pursued by footballer Ashley Cole according to journalist Katie Hind.
Markle, who got engaged to Prince Harry last week, came close to going on a date with the ex-Arsenal, Chelsea and England left back who, as we all know was once married to X-Factor Judge, Cheryl Tweedy.
The new addition to the Royal Family had no idea who Cole was when she asked Hind her opinion on the highly decorated player. Hind revealed to Markle that Cole had been accused of being unfaithful, which was the main reason for the breakdown of his and Tweedy’s marriage.
Writing in The Daily Mail Hind says:
[Meghan pulled an] iPhone from her handbag, she pointed to the picture of a good-looking man on her Twitter account, and said: ‘Do you know this guy, Ashley Cole?
‘He follows me and he keeps trying to talk to me on Twitter. He’s trying really hard’.
‘I bet,’ I said calmly.
She continued: ‘He wants to go out on a date while I’m over here in London. What do you think? Do you know him?’.
At the time Cole was still playing for West London Premier league giants Chelsea and raking in £100,000 per-week. However his image had taken a severe hit during the peak of his career when he was accused of allegedly cheating on his then-pop-star-wife. It was an allegation which Markle had no knowledge about.
The journalist took it upon herself to warn Meghan Markle about Cole’s reported string of affairs while he was still married to the former Girls Aloud member, who divorced him in 2010.
So, as the evening progressed, I set her straight.
Meghan seemed taken aback, and quietly replied: ‘Thanks, I appreciate it. Some of my friends told me to stay away from him, too.’
Then she giggled: ‘I think I’ll leave it.’
As things go it seems Markle has dodged a bullet thanks to Hind, somewhat brutal honesty, about the former England left-back’s apparent promiscuity.
Despite being hailed as one of the best left-backs England has ever produced, at one point he was even considered the best left-back in the world, Cole remains a rather divisive figure.
Well done Meghan, we back your decision…
