In the late 1980’s, one of boxings greatest ever champions, Sugar Ray Leonard exclaimed that when ‘Michael Buffer introduces a fighter, it makes him want to fight’.
Michael Buffer is without doubt the golden voice behind all of boxing’s greatest bouts.
Whether you’re obsessed with the fine art of pugilism, watch the odd bout but don’t really care, or have never seen a fight in your life – chances are you still know Buffer’s catchphrase. Let’s get ready to rumble!!!!
That catchphrase was coined by Buffer back in 1984 and as expected it gained him some hella attention.
Just a matter of years later, Buffer acquired a federal trademark on the catchphrase and that’s when the money really started to roll in, according to The Richest.
From the use of that catchphrase being roared before hundreds of thousands of fights across the globe – the 72-year-old has made more than $400 million.
In fact – Buffer doesn’t even have to say them himself. Just from the trademark rights alone he makes some serious dollar everytime another ring announcer utters those five beautiful and immortal words.
But that isn’t to say Buffer doesn’t get paid big when he steps his Brylcreemed and tuxedo’d self into the ring. It’s thought that for a number of fights he’s pocketed over $5 million.
Interestingly, it wasn’t until Buffer was 38 that he began his career as a ring announcer. Before that he worked a number of odd jobs from a car salesman to a model. Buffer also fought for the U.S. during the Vietnam War.
And the living legend will be introducing tonight’s heated battle between Tony Bellew and David Haye.
I guess all there is left to say is: Let’s Get Ready To Rumbleeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
