What’s the worst thing you can do on the internet? According to the highest figure in the Russian church, it’s bringing about the coming of the antichrist!
That’s right, Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church has said that most dangerous threat to Christianity is ‘the person who will be at the head of the worldwide web’.
But who is that?
As reported by the BBC, Kirill told Russian state tv:
Every time you use your gadget, whether you like it or not, whether you turn on your location or not, somebody can find out exactly where you are, exactly what your interests are and exactly what you are scared of.
Do you imagine what power will be concentrated in the hands of those who gain knowledge about what is going on in the world?
He also announced that smartphone users need to be careful, as the internet represented ‘an opportunity to gain global control over mankind’.
If he’s correct, the end of days may soon be upon us – 55.1 per cent of the world’s population already have internet access (June 2018), and that number continues to rise at alarming rates.
We are not sure whether the antichrist will take the shape of Mark Zuckerberg or Sundar Pichai, but luckily the Russians weren’t worried about what Kirill had to say too much.

Smile, the Antichrist is about to fly out.
Not everyone was happy about the bishop’s comments, with some people proclaiming that the church was serving Vladimir Putin’s regime.
Heavy restrictions mean that internet freedom is being attacked in Russia, with reports that Russia is actually trying to create its own independent, national Internet.
2019 is going to be an interesting time for both global affairs and technology, with the coming of the antichrist not necessarily being the scariest thing that will happen this year.
