American Horror Story is coming back for its eighth season this year, and the story is set to combine elements of the shows most notorious seasons.
American Horror Story is made up of a series of self-contained stories. Each season takes place in a setting independent from the rest, and usually follows a different set of characters and themes. The next season, however, may bend the rules of this structure, creating something we haven’t ever seen before in American Horror Story.
American screenwriter Ryan Murphy revealed on Twitter this morning that the next season of the thrilling FX show would involve a crossover of American Horror Story’s first season, Murder House, and its third season, Coven.
The Coven/Murder House AHS crossover season won't be happening next year…because it's happening THIS YEAR. AHS #8 WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER
— Ryan Murphy (@MrRPMurphy) June 14, 2018
Murphy originally mentioned the crossover when speaking to Entertainment Weekly a couple of years ago, though at that time he did not reveal when the project would come into play:
We do know what we’re going to do
It’s not going to be next season, but we are going to do a season that’s a crossover between Murder House and Coven together, which is very bizarre.
There will be characters from Murder House and characters from Coven together.
It is confirmed that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, who both appeared in Murder House and Coven, will be back for the eighth season.
Paulson spoke to Digital Spy about her return in AHS season eight.
The only thing I can say is it’s something I’ve never done on the show before which is saying something because I’ve done a lot of wackadoodle stuff.
Murphy revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he had been contacting members of the previous seasons to try and get them on board.
I’ve [already] started going to actors from both of the seasons, quietly, saying, ‘I think in this window, if you could fit us in
So yeah, it’s fun. It’s weird
Speaking again later to Entertainment Weekly, it seems Murphy was successful in his recruiting, as he said there would be the return of some fan favourites alongside the stars already set to appear.
You will see so many fan favourites return that you’ll feel like it’s The Love Boat,
It’s a very high concept. It’s a season unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it.
There’s a huge thing that happens in episode 5.
Other American Horror Story alumni to make a comeback include Kathy Bates, Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Eichner, Adina Porter and Leslie Grossman.
One newcomer who is confirmed to make an appearance in the eighth season is Joan Collins.
Rumours have been floating around that suggest the eighth season of American Horror Story may be called AHS: Radioactive, though the name of the season is yet to be confirmed. One thing that we can presume confirmed, however, is the theme of witches in the eighth season following Murphy’s excited ‘WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER’ in his tweet.
Murphy spoke earlier this year at the Television Critics Association about the upcoming season, saying it would be set in the future, The Hollywood Reporter state.
It’s set in the future, but not the theme.
The near-distant future. It’s a projection story.
The Hollywood Reporter explain that Murphy added how the show would differ from season seven.
It’s not necessarily as real and grounded as the past season. We’re sort of getting back to Asylum and Coven. That’s the tone of it.
Murphy’s tweet reveals that American Horror Story season 8 will air in September 2018.
