Somehow it’s been an incredible 17 years since the most dangerous television show ever made hit our screens – Jackass.

At the turn of the century viewers were astounded as the new MTV reality show literally exploded with people performing various painful stunts and pranks all of which were both dumb and amazing at the same time.

The cast became celebrities overnight including host Johnny Knoxville, a man admired by millions around the world.

Responsible for the majority of ideas in the show and the de facto leader of the group, Knoxville shot to stardom and post-Jackass was quickly cast in several Hollywood films.

With appearances in Men In Black II and 2014’s movie adaptation Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, his career appeared to be going rather well but one day he just seemed to disappear.

Having pretty much vanished from the public eye his dedicated fans are left wondering, where is he now?

According to YouTube channel Looper there are several reasons as to why we don’t hear from Knoxville anymore and on the whole they aren’t exactly positive.

His films flopped at the box office

Despite appearing in various Hollywood movies, Knoxville mainly made cameos and when he did act it wasn’t well received by the critics.

Audiences also didn’t enjoy take well to the films he did star in such as The Dukes of Hazard, Walking Tall and The Ringer tanking at the box office.

Aside from Men in Black II, only the three Jackass films Knoxville made did well with the public and considering he isn’t exactly acting in these, it’s no surprise he hasn’t appeared on the silver screen much.

He has suffered some terrible injuries

Since Jackass was the most risky and hazardous TV series ever made it’s no surprise Knoxville sustained several injuries.

He allegedly ‘nearly died’ when a rocket exploded under him and was knocked out twice during filming of the first film.

However – and arguably worst of all – Knoxville broke his penis, tearing his urethra, when a motorbike stunt went wrong, leaving him having to use a catheter twice a day and unable to perform as many stunts as he used to.

Ouch!

The death of Ryan Dunn

In 2011 Knoxville’s close friend and co-star Ryan Dunn was killed in a car accident aged just 34.

At the time Knoxville released a statement saying:

You’ll have to excuse me, I’m just very sad because I lost my brother and my world got about 134 per cent less funny.

I don’t know what to say right now so I will close with I love you Ryan.

I have a lot of emotions swirling but I want you to know I love you so very much.

It clearly impacted Knoxville who made the Jackass spin-off Bad Grandpa which while slated by critics was a commercial success.

He has been working on smaller projects

However, since we haven’t heard much about Bad Grandpa or Johnny Knoxville since its release it appears he has taken a step back.

He’s been keeping busy though working on various smaller projects such as Weightless and Above Suspicion, neither of which caused a stir.

Even his slightly bigger projects like the 2013 Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Last Stand didn’t receive much attention at all.

Family life

A true family man as a father of three, he credits the impending birth of his first child with jumpstarting his career coming up with the idea of Jackass to put food on the table.

Keeping his personal life out of the tabloids, he’s probably enjoying his time away from the spotlight.

Who knows whether Knoxville will come back out into the spotlight but for now he seems to be taking a long deserved break.
