A knife-wielding 14-year-old high school student is in critical condition after being shot by a policeman in front of a crowd of children.
The unidentified teen had got into a fight outside the library at Hug High School in Reno, Nevada when he pulled out two knives and attacked.
At that point, a school police officer told the student to drop the knife. When the student didn’t cooperate, the officer shot him andprovided medical attention, according to Reno Police Chief Jason Soto.
The teen was in a critical condition at Reno Hospital following the incident in Nevada yesterday, ABC News reports.
Reno police officer Tim Broadway told reporters earlier Wednesday that more than 40 students witnessed the incident, including many who shot cellphone footage.
There’s multiple videos out there. There’s some very disturbing video out there. But there are other events that led up to this incident, so please don’t react to those.
According to reports, one high school freshman Robert Barragan earlier told the Reno Gazette-Journal that an officer shot a student in the shoulder after the teen pulled a knife and stabbed a classmate, however this has not been confirmed by police.
The high school was placed under lockdown until midafternoon when students were released to their parents.
School district officials said classes would resume as scheduled on Thursday.
