From the moment they announced a sequel to Ridley Scott’s magnificent techno-noir thriller Blade Runner we were worried, after all how do you escape the shadow of a film that helped to define science fiction?
Well the answer according to this amazing new trailer is you hire the director of Arrival and Sicario, Denis Villeneuve, and dust off everyone’s favourite replicant/human Harrison Ford to star in Blade Runner 2049.
While we don’t know much about the plot we do know it’s set thirty years after the first film and follows a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K played by Ryan Gosling, who unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos.
K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who’s been missing since the events of the first film.
Gosling and Ford will both be leading an ensemble cast including; Dave Bautista, Sylvia Hoeks, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri, David Dastmalchian, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, and Jared Leto.
While it doesn’t solve all the problems I have with a sequel to one of my favourite sci-fi films ever – I’m worried it will feel like it has to solve all the original’s mysteries – I’m cautiously optimistic.
Blade Runner 2049 hits theatres October 6, 2017.
