Johnny Depp won his 14th People’s Choice Award Wednesday, this time for favorite movie icon. But what’s most surprising is that he actually came to collect the trophy in person.
Having been through a rough few months, Depp finalised his divorce to Amber Heard last week. And it now looks like the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is beginning to make his transition back into the public eye.
Starting with a humble (although awkward) speech, Depp thanked fans for their support during his acceptance speech at the People’s Choice Awards.
“I came here for one reason tonight, and one reason only,” the 53-year-old actor addressed the audience. “I came here for you. The people. Who, through whatever good times or bad, have stood by me. Have trusted me.”
You’ve very, very graciously invited me here once again tonight so I appreciate that very much. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.
Listen, I was very deeply affected by the kindness of your recognition and by your well-wishes to my family and to myself. Which is why it’s especially meaningful to me to be here, in front of you, to say thank you, and to tell you that I truly feel that need to thank you.
In all honesty, we all know that none of us, especially me, wouldn’t be standing up here if it weren’t for you tonight.
Depp then gave a shout-out to his late mother who passed away last year, before saying: “So thank you, and give ’em hell, Betty Sue!”
His words were an indirect reference to the past few months during which his image took a very public hit in the media.
As previously reported, the actor was accused of allegedly physically and verbally abusing Heard during their short-lived marriage after she filed for divorce in May. After months of back-and-forth in court, they settled their divorce for $7 million on August 16.
Their divorce was finalised on January 13, after eight months of legal drama.
