The lack of black nominees for this year’s Academy Awards has prompted a widespread discussion and debate about diversity in Hollywood, and it was only a matter of time until SNL gave their take on the situation.
As the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite continues to trend online, the Saturday Night Live team went all in on the Academy with an extremely on-point sketch about the issue last night.
Set at the fictional ‘Screen Guild Awards’, the sketch shows how numerous white actors are nominated for the awards, despite them all having marginal roles in films featuring primarily black talent.
And, some of the movies parodied here look very familiar, indeed. From boxing movie ‘Punching Upwards’ to rap biopic ‘Seven Down’, it won’t take the most ardent of movie buffs to figure out which films they might be referencing here.
As for the winner of the Best Actor award? Well, it was a five-way tie of course, for ‘all the white guys’. They finally did it!
To be honest, it’s all a bit too realistic, if you ask us…
