England kick off their Euro 2016 campaign on Saturday against Russia, and Shaun Ryder has released an unofficial anthem to spur the Three Lions on.
The group called Four Lions – nothing to do with the film about hapless homegrown terrorists – consists of Ryder, Paul Oakenfold, plus Kermit and Goldie of Black Grape.
The track called ‘We Are England’ is pretty catchy, but it is also so 90s that you’ll be immediately reaching for a bucket hat and trying to find out if your dealer has any ‘proper Es’ going.
Have a listen:
Ryder is reported by the Metro as saying:
Hopefully our song will send out a positive vibe to the England fans and put a smile on their faces.
We did two writing sessions at my house in the “man cave” then two studio sessions in Manchester. Me and Kermit wrote the lyrics and Dan Broad, the Mondays and Black Grape’s musical director engineered it. It was recorded all over the place – Oakey was in Los Angeles, Goldie was in Thailand and me and Kermit in Salford and Manchester.
We had a few Guinnesses in the studio so it’s a bit hazy, but we did film the studio time and the writing sessions.
We were calling ourselves the four lions, but that should be three lions and a sea lion (Shaun the sea lion). I thought we made a really good team and everybody involved had a good vibe.
Maybe we should knock off a few more tracks seeing as we’re on a roll.
It’s alright, but nothing will ever beat Baddiel and Skinner’s Euro 96 classic…
