Michael Cera opens up about the moment he almost 'spontaneously' married Aubrey Plaza

We've been robbed of a peak indie sleaze wedding.

Michael Cera just gave us a dose of 2010s nostalgia revealing he almost became Mr Plaza for a hot minute.

It was only 2016 when Aubrey Plaza shared she and Cera dated for a year and a half after working together on Scott Pilgrim vs The World, in which he plays the titular role.

Now, the Canadian actor has doubled down on Plaza's confession that the pair considered tying the knot, expanding on the subject in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

"Well, we were driving through Vegas and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married," he admitted.

He added: "Yeah... Like something where you get a certificate," when asked if they were going for an Elvis impersonator and a chapel.

Cera, who stars in the new season of Black Mirror, also explained the reasoning behind their idea to walk down the aisle in full indie sleaze attire.

"I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other 'my ex-husband' and 'my ex-wife' at like… 20," he said.

As we now know, the former couple's plan never became a reality and they didn't get to say 'I do' to each other.

Cera quietly married his wife Nadine in 2017 or 2018, while Plaza tied the knot to director Jeff Baena in 2021.

The two stars remained friends after their split, with Cera having nothing but praise for Plaza, whose career skyrocketed after playing Julie Powers in Scott Pilgrim.

"I mean, she's always been so committed to everything that she does," he said of the actor, who went on to star on seven seasons of NBC mockumentary Parks and Rec, as well as producing her own movies.

"It's not surprising to me that she's doing really well," Cera continued.

He then said: "The thing that's surprising to me is how much she's producing and putting together projects. It's amazing. Ingrid Goes West? That was so great."

Released in 2017, the drama produced by Plaza stars her as a woman who becomes obsessed with an influencer, played by Marvel star Elizabeth Olsen.

In 2022, Plaza earned critical praise for her performance in the second season of anthology series The White Lotus, set in Sicily and starring Jennifer Coolidge, F Murray Abraham and Theo James, to name but a few.

The same year, she starred in thriller Emily the Criminal, in which she also served as a producer.

As for Cera and Plaza working together again, it seems likely the two pals will likely reunite on the previously announced Scott Pilgrim The Anime, coming to Netflix at a TBC date.
