Piers Morgan's 'Weird' David Beckham Super Bowl Tweet Sparks Reaction Online

It's a sentence you've heard time and again: members of the public are criticising Piers Morgan. Although this time it's not over vegan sausage rolls or comments about 'snowflakes'.

Like millions of people across the globe, Morgan was among those watching the 56th annual Super Bowl which took place in California last night, February 13.

The final game of the NFL season saw the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 with a late touchdown, prompting celebrations from supporters and the team while Morgan used the opportunity to take a dig at a footballer from his own country.

Not just any footballer, I should add, but David Beckham.

I don't think I need to explain that Beckham is one of the best-known former players out there, having retired in 2013 after winning six Premier League titles and two FA cups throughout a 21-year career. It's safe to say he knew what he was doing on the pitch, but Morgan took a dig at Beckham as he tweeted a picture of Los Angeles Rams player Odell Beckham Jr and wrote: 'Great to watch a Beckham who can actually play football….'

Beckham Jr. had a strong start in yesterday's game and scored the first touchdown of the event, however he was ruled out after suffering a knee injury late in the second quarter.

Morgan's opinion of Beckham has been blasted online by both football fans and big names in the sport, including former player Gary Lineker.

Sharing Morgan's tweet, Lineker wrote: 'You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest.'

Other Twitter users branded Morgan's opinion as 'weird', while a couple summed up his opinion by tweeting the poo emoji.

One tweet reads: 'What? Is this a weird dig at David Beckham? If so, I know you're getting on a bit, and your memory isn't what it once was, but Becks was pretty damn good at football.'

Another commented: 'David Beckham was one of the best players england has produced in the last 30 years, he won almost every trophy he competed for. Even by your standards this is a [sh*t] take.'

It wasn't just fans of Beckham who stood up for the player after Morgan shared his thoughts, with one Twitter user writing that while they are 'no fan of David Beckham', there could be 'no denying that he was an incredible footballer.'

Morgan doesn't appear to have responded to the criticism he received at the time of writing, February 14, but I'm sure he'll have something to say if it continues.
