The Weeknd thinks he 'forgot how to sing' because character he was acting couldn't sing

The singer has opened up about the 'terrifying' moment he 'forgot how to sing' whilst filming The Idol

The Weeknd thinks he 'forgot how to sing' because the character he was acting couldn't sing.

The singer is now fresh from filming for the upcoming drama series, The Idol, and has since opened up about the difficulties of balancing his new acting career alongside his musical duties.

After having to cut a show short after losing his voice back in September of last year, The Weeknd has come up with his own 'theory' as to why the 'terrifying' incident happened.

The Weeknd has recently teamed up with Reza Fahim and Euphoria's Sam Levinson to co-create the HBO show set to hit our screens later next month (4 June).

The star, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, will also be starring in the series alongside Lily-Rose Depp to play the character of Tedros - a self-help guru and cult leader.

The premise for the latest series focuses on aspiring pop idol, Jocelyn (Depp), and her complex relationship with Tedros as he takes her under his wing.

But, it seems like the role took quite a toll on The Weeknd when he had to halt a concert after he had been filming scenes for The Idol.

Speaking at the sold-out SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles last year (3 September 2022), the singer told the crowd: "I don’t know what just happened… but I just lost my voice.

"This is killing me, I don’t want to stop the show but I can’t give you the concert I want to give you right now."

He went on to assure fans he would 'make sure everybody’s good' and give them their 'money back' before promising: "I'll do a show real soon for you guys. But I wanted to come out and personally apologize."

The Weeknd said losing his voice was 'terrifying'.

The 'Can't Feel My Face' hit-maker has since revealed to W Magazine what might have been responsible for his inability to sing.

Recalling the moment, he told the outlet: "I had to take off The Weeknd outfit, put on Tedros’s wig, shoot with Jocelyn, then go back to being The Weeknd.

"It was tough to go from one head to another. Then, after the concert, I lost my voice. No voice came out at all. That’s never happened before."

He continued: "My theory is that I forgot how to sing because I was playing Tedros, a character who doesn’t know how to sing.

"I may be looking too deeply into this, but it was terrifying. As The Weeknd, I’ve never skipped a concert. I’ve performed with the flu. I’ll die on that stage.

"But there was something very complicated going on with my mind at that moment."

The Idol will be available to watch on HBO next month (4 June).
